"The Oriental Pastime of Snakes and Ladders" antique board game (board only) with moralistic illustrations (c.1890-1914) (SOLD)
A late Victorian or Edwardian "The Oriental Pastime of Snakes & Ladders - The Latest Improved Edition" antique board game (board only), "British Manufacture", dating from c.1890-1914. The twofold thin card board measures approximately 37.5 x 37.1cm (14.75 x 14.6in) when fully unfolded; the design of the playing surface includes squares with Victorian-style depictions of virtues, vices and their consequences; for example, a ladder rises from "Obedience" to "Respect", whilst a snake descends from "Bad Temper" to "Murder"!
There is considerable age wear including wear to the edges and slight splitting to the ends of the cloth hinge, whilst there is marking and discoloration to both sides of the board.
