Product description

Karate: The Art of "Empty Hand" Fighting - H. Nishiyama, R. C. Brown (1965) (SOLD)

Hidetaka Nishiyama and Richard C. Brown, "Karate: The Art of "Empty Hand" Fighting" (Rutland, Vermont, and Tokyo, Japan, Charles E. Tuttle Company, Inc., 1960; twenty-fourth printing 1965). Vintage hardback martial arts book (sackcloth-covered boards, printed / impressed titles and Japanese characters), 251pp, measuring approximately 19.1 x 26.4 x 2.8cm (7.5 x 10.4 x 1.1in). "It became apparent a few years ago that the growing interest which many foreigners, both in Japan and abroad, had begun to show in karate was more than a superficial attraction to the exotic. Since there was virtually nothing available in English, we realized that there was now a real need for a thorough introduction to karate ... what we have tried to present is a sober and rational introduction to karate in its three main aspects - as a healthful physical art, as an effective form of self-defense, and as an exciting sport."

No dustjacket; the cover is discoloured to the spine and elsewhere with some marks together with considerable wear to the printing and general age wear; the first (pre-title) page has had a large area torn off the corner, and there are a couple of short edge tears to the rear flyleaf, together with splitting between the rear flyleaf and the inside back cover along the whole length of the hinge (although the remainder of the binding is still sound); the pages are discoloured with tanning to edges and various marks together with moderate edge, corner and general reading wear.
