Product description

Henry Ernest Dudeney, "Amusements in Mathematics" (c.1930) - vintage hardback book of mathematical puzzles (SOLD)

Henry Ernest Dudeney, "Amusements in Mathematics" (London etc., Thomas Nelson and Sons, Ltd., author's preface dated 1917; this copy has prize presentation plate from the Henrietta Barnett School, Hampstead Garden Suburb, dated "1931-32", glued to inside front cover). Hardcover (red cloth boards), 258pp plus title and contents pages and preface, measuring approximately 14.6 x 20.2 x 2.3cm (5.75 x 7.95 x 0.9in). A collection of 430 miscellaneous mathematical puzzles (with solutions given separately), with titles such as "The Beanfeast Puzzle", "A Queer Thing in Money", "The Five Brigands" and "Mrs. Perkins's Quilt", presented in a delightfully old-fashioned style with numerous black-and-white illustrations and diagrams.

No dustjacket; the cover is marked, discoloured and faded in parts (especially to the spine, which has a large white paint splash at the bottom) with age wear including scratches, scuffs and a small indentation to the boards, wear and bumping to the edges and corners, and splitting to the upper rear spine hinge; the front endpaper is missing, and although the rear endpaper is still present, the surface of the inside back cover adjacent to the spine is damaged in such a way as suggests that a second endpaper or additional leaf has been removed; the pages are discoloured with tanning to edges, foxing in places and other marks (including scribbled pencil writing to the top of the title page) together with moderate age wear including bumping and nicking to edges and slight corner creasing; the binding is weak at the hinges but remains intact.
