"Good Housekeeping's Picture Cookery" (revised edition, 1959) - vintage recipe book (SOLD)
"Good Housekeeping's Picture Cookery. Compiled by [the] Good Housekeeping Institute" (London, The National Magazine Company Ltd.; fourth revised edition 1957, reprinted 1959). Vintage hardback recipe book (off-white / pale buff cloth boards, gilt / green titles), 256pp plus colour plates / advertisements, measuring approximately 18.6 x 25.3 x 2.2cm (7.3 x 9.95 x 0.85in). "The aim of Picture Cookery is (as it has always been since it was first published in 1950) to provide a clear and practical book which is both beautiful to look at and easy to use. In the belief that pictures tell the story better than words, instructions and recipes are kept as short as possible, so that the busy cook-housewife can easily follow any recipe, old or new, knowing that the result will be a well-cooked and attractive-looking dish." Towards the end of the book are advertisements (some in colour) for Heinz Tomato Ketchup, Cadbury's Bourneville Cocoa, Lyle's Golden Syrup, Rayner's cake flavourings, G.E.C. and Aga cookers, Davis gelatine and Tala kitchenware.
No dustjacket; the cover is much marked and discoloured with green oxidation to the gilt titles (especially to the spine) together with considerable age wear including scratches, scuffs, slight bumping, and some splitting / wearing through to the cloth at the top of the spine and to the lower edges and corners; the pages are discoloured with various marks, some corner creases, edge wear including slight tears, and general wear from age and use, although they remain perfectly readable.
