"Flowers Keg Bitter" vintage ceramic advertising figure (bust of Shakespeare) by Carlton Ware (c.1960s) (SOLD)
A c.1960s vintage Carlton Ware ceramic advertising figure with handpainted, transfer and gilt decoration, in the form of a bust of William Shakespeare glued to a separately moulded plinth which bears the slogan "Pick Flowers Keg Bitter". The piece measures approximately 25.5cm (10.05in) in overall height, whilst the base of the plinth measures approximately 14.4 x 13.3cm (5.65 x 5.25in); the latter bears the yellow transfer mark "Carlton Ware / Handpainted / MADE IN ENGLAND / "TRADE MARK"" together with a small gilt mark, and is impressed with the number "2614".
There is some crazing to and below Shakespeare's head, around his right hand and to his book, whilst there is some fine crazing (visible only upon close inspection) to his back; there is some age wear including some scratches, slight scuffs and spots of abrasion, with some marking to the foot of the plinth; there are some minor imperfections to the glaze and decoration, including occasional tiny bumps and pinholes.
