"Dr Barnardo's Homes" vintage papier-mache cottage money / collecting boxes x 2 (c.1930s-50s) (SOLD)
A pair of c.1930s-50s vintage papier-mache cottage-shaped money / collecting boxes for the children's charity "Dr Barnardo's Homes", handpainted with attached paper labels and windows / doors, each measuring approximately 13.1 x 9 x 11.9cm (5.15 x 3.55 x 4.7in). These boxes were intended for use as "home boxes" by members of the "Barnardo Helpers' League", who would have kept them in their own homes and returned them to the charity when full. The walls of one "cottage" are painted in a deeper shade of cream than those of the other.
One box is missing its base stopper, whilst the other retains it beneath the label that would originally have sealed it. The painted finish of both boxes is marked in places; the paper labels and windows / doors have suffered from damp, being somewhat stained and worn, and in some cases disintegrating and partly or wholly missing. Both boxes nevertheless remain very appealing - in more ways than one! SOLD Feb. 2009 We regret that this item is now out of stock.
