Charles Michael Daugherty, "Searchers of the Sea: Pioneers in Oceanography" (1963) - vintage hardback book (SOLD)
Charles Michael Daugherty (with one chapter by C. M. Yonge; illustrated by Don Miller), "Searchers of the Sea: Pioneers in Oceanography" (originally published New York, 1961; this edition London, Phoenix House Ltd, 1963). Hardcover (dark blue cloth-effect textured boards, silver title to spine) with original pictorial dustwrapper, 155pp, measuring approximately 14.7 x 22.2 x 2.2cm (5.8 x 8.75 x 0.85in). "The reader accompanies such great explorers as Captain Cook on his expedition to the South Pacific, is told about the discovery of the Gulf Stream through the inquiries of Benjamin Franklin on ocean currents, can study the habits of the sperm whale and the giant squid with the Prince of Monaco, and investigate the bizarre world of the ocean bottom in a description of the records made by Auguste Piccard's bathyscaphe. Professor C. M. Yonge also writes a special chapter on the rise of the modern oceanographic institute, where present-day searchers of the sea... work together to explore the wonders of the depths."
The dustjacket is tattered, worn and creased with some loss, discoloration and marking, whilst the boards are slightly marked with fading to edges and bumping to the lower edge; the pages are discoloured with various marks including some foxing together with some edge wear, an indentation to the top corner of the front endpaper where an old price has been rubbed out, and some creasing (probably dating from publication) to the top corners of a few pages adjacent to the spine.
