Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. "Pomona" antique blue and white earthenware dinner plate (strawberry design), with date mark for 1881 (SOLD)
A Victorian antique earthenware dinner plate by Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co., measuring approximately 25.9cm (10.2in) in diameter, in bluish-white glaze with a transfer-printed design of a strawberry plant (including an attendant wasp). To the base is impressed the name of the manufacturer (scarcely legible), together with a kite registration mark (as used on English earthenware from 1842-83), which indicates that this plate was produced in 1881. In addition to these marks, there are two blue printed marks: one is the manufacturer's mark which incorporates a crown, shield and garter with the words "B WM & C / POMONA", and the other is the retailer's stamp for John Mortlock Pottery Galleries, Oxford Street and Orchard Street, London.
There is a large chip to the underside edge (just visible from the top), together with two medium-large chips to the upper edge and the occasional nibble; there are several scratches to the surface, together with slight wear to the design and various minor manufacturing irregularities.
