Product description

William Bradford (ed.), "Correspondence of the Emperor Charles V and his Ambassadors" (c.1850-56) - Victorian hardback book

William Bradford (ed.), "Correspondence of the Emperor Charles V. [ruler of the Holy Roman Empire 1519-1555, and, as Charles I, ruler of the Spanish Empire 1516-55] and his Ambassadors at the Courts of England and France, from the Original Letters in the Imperial Family Archives at Vienna; with a Connecting Narrative and Biographical Notices of the Emperor, and of some of the most distinguished Officers of his Army and Household; together with the Emperor's Itinerary from 1519-1551" (London, Richard Bentley; the title page and frontispiece are dated 1850, but the pages of engraved facsimile handwriting bound into the centre of the volume are dated 1856).  Scarce mid-19th century hardback book, 576pp plus frontispiece and two other portrait engravings, measuring approximately 14.5 x 23 x 4.5cm (5.7 x 9.05 x 1.75in).

This copy is ex-Carlisle Public Library, and thus has library labels and a ticket pouch with ticket to the inside covers, stamps on the title page, handwritten numbers on the reverse of the title page, and the remains of a very old label on the spine.  The binding is very worn, the back cover hanging loose and the cover being held in place at the front with masking tape, whilst there is bumping, fraying, fading to the spine and general wear.  The engravings are heavily foxed and much discoloured, whilst the other pages have some discoloration and (in some cases) marking, and there are occasional creases and slight tears; the hand-cut page edges show a degree of characteristic roughness.
