Product description

Washington Irving, "Rip Van Winkle, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (Her Majesty's Edition, 1900) - hardback classic fiction book

Washington Irving (edited by S. J. Adair Fitz-Gerald), "Rip Van Winkle, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (Her Majesty's Edition) (London, Greening & Co., Ltd, 1900). Hardback classic fiction book (green cloth boards with Arts and Crafts style printed design to front cover and spine, with advertisement for "Dr. J. Collis Browne's Chlorodyne" to back cover), 204pp (of thick paper which appears to be hand-made, having a pattern of lines) plus six illustrations and 24-page publisher's catalogue, measuring approximately 13.5 x 19.4 x 2.8cm (5.3 x 7.65 x 1.1in). In addition to the two title tales, this volume contains the tale of Peter Klaus the Goatherd ("A German Legend" with similarities to the tale of Rip Van Winkle), together with an Introduction and "The Stage History of Rip Van Winkle" by the Editor. Four of the illustrations are of photographs from the 1899 London stage production of Rip Van Winkle (three of these show the great actor Herbert Beerbohm Tree, to whom the volume is dedicated), whilst the other two are illustrations signed "Will G. Mein".

No dustjacket; the cover has been covered with clear plastic film which shows some wear including slight cracking at the ends of the spine, whilst there are some marks to the cover together with wear to the corners and fading and discoloration to the spine; there is some weakness to the binding (although there are no loose pages), whilst the front endpaper is missing as is the sheet of thin tissue paper which originally protected the frontispiece; the pages are discoloured with considerable foxing and other marks (including an old annotation in ink to the penultimate page), bumping and creasing to corners and some tears (mostly to the outer edges of the leaves which are roughly hand-cut), whilst the pages of the publisher's catalogue are very much browned and tanned around the edges.
