Vintage "composition" vase - beige / brown with peach design / impressed Art Deco pattern
A c.1930s-40s vintage vase, moulded with a pattern of peaches to the front and leaves to the back against an Art Deco geometric background pattern, finished to the exterior in matt beige and brown with glossy, partly metallic peach and leaf decoration, and in green and yellow-green to the interior. The vase, which measures approximately 18.3cm (7.2in) tall and 10.5cm (4.15in) in diameter at the top, and is impressed "BRITISH / MAKE / 165" to the base, resembles cheap matt-finish painted pottery of its era (such as Brentleigh Ware), but has a different, more "hollow" feel, and thus seems to be made of a "composition" material which, if not in fact unbreakable, should at least be less fragile than pottery. (We have tested it for watertightness by half-filling it with water for half an hour; there was no leakage, and the water stayed nicely cold!)
There are a couple of hairline cracks to the rim (the longer one is about 2.5cm / 1in); there is some marking and discoloration to the surface together with age wear including a few scratches and some spots and patches of loss to the painted finish.
