Product description

Veg-o-Matic Food Preparer (retro vintage kitchen appliance) in original box

An early 1970s vintage "Veg-o-Matic Food Preparer" ("slices, dices, chips"), by Popeil Brothers, Inc., Chicago, distributed by T.V. Promotions, Ltd, London, in its original box, complete with the original "use and care" leaflet and re-order form; the box measures approximately 20.6 x 14.6 x 16.8cm (8.1 x 5.75 x 6.6in), whilst the machine itself stands approximately 16.8cm (6.6in) tall. The machine, which is made mainly of white plastic, has a sprung lid (which can be locked when not in use), beneath which are two detachable metal rings with cutting blades, which lift out for cleaning; the top ring can be placed in three positions to enable the machine to slice foods thinly or thickly, or to dice. (The re-order form lists an optional wedge-cutting ring, which is not included in this set.) Stylistically, the machine is strongly reminiscent of 1950s American automobiles; the copyright of the design dates from 1963, and the design of the instruction leaflet appears to be of that vintage, but the copyright date on the base of the box is 1969, and the prices on the order form are in decimal currency; this example therefore probably dates from the early 1970s.

The box is much discoloured with marking / staining, bumping and general age wear, whilst there is some yellowing, marking / foxing and age wear to the leaflets (with slight rust to the staples of the "use and care" booklet). The machine itself, however, is in good vintage condition with only slight wear and marking to the plastic (there is some roughness to the edges, which probably dates from manufacture); the sprung mechanism works well, and there is no rust to the metal parts. Please note, however, that as we have not tested the machine, and therefore we do not know how sharp the blades are, or how effective they are at cutting, this item is offered for sale as a collectable or display piece only, and not for use.
