The Green Carnation - Robert Hichens (1949) - vintage reprint of 1894 satirical novel

Robert Hichens, "The Green Carnation" (London, The Unicorn Press, 1949). Vintage hardback book (dark blue-green cloth boards, printed titles) with original dustwrapper designed by John Parsons, 176pp plus title pages and introduction, measuring approximately 13.5 x 19.3 x 2.1cm (5.3 x 7.6 x 0.85in). "When "THE GREEN CARNATION" made its first appearance anonymously in 1895 it quickly became a social topic, much speculation being aroused as to the identity of its author. Its immediate success can be attributed to the fact that it not only provided a most amusing skit on the so-called Aesthetic Movement, but also introduced into its pages thinly disguised portraits of its principal exponents [i.e. Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas] ... It now makes its reappearance for the first time after a lapse of many years, the Author adding an Introduction in which he tells us how the book came to be written, and relates the circumstances in which he came into contact with its protagonists."

The dustjacket (now covered with a clear protective sleeve) is much discoloured (especially to the spine) with some marks together with age wear including bumping, creasing and slight tearing to edges and splitting to folds, and has been price-clipped to the front flap; there is some discoloration and marking to the cover together with some age wear including bumping to the edges and corners and light creasing along the spine; the inside covers and endpapers are discoloured with foxing and other marks, the front endpaper bearing the name of the original owner in ink and being slightly marked where an old price has been erased; the pages are discoloured with some tanning to the rough-cut edges, some marks, occasional creases and moderate reading wear; the binding is a little weak in places but remains intact.
