Product description

The Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire - Edward Gibbon ("World's Classics", 1903-06)

Edward Gibbon, "The History of The Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire" ("The World's Classics" series, seven volumes: vols. 1-2: London, Grant Richards, 1903; vols. 3-5: London, Grant Richards, 1904; vols. 6-7: London etc., Henry Frowde, Oxford University Press, 1906). Set of Edwardian books, leather bindings with flexible board covers, gilt ornamentation to spines and gilt panels to front (matching except for the front panels and publisher's names of the last two volumes), and gilt page edges to top (the remaining edges being roughly hand-cut); each volume has about 5-600 pages, and measures approximately 10.4 x 15.8 x 3.5cm (4.1 x 6.2 x 1.4in). Six of the volumes are inscribed by or to the original owner, in various styles, at the front; all seven include the original owner's hand-written summary of the contents, neatly sewn in or otherwise attached at the back.

No dustjackets; there is considerable wear to the covers, especially to the edges and corners, with varying amounts of marking, fading, creasing, scuffing, rubbing etc; the condition of the spines varies from worn to disintegrating and fragmentary, but all have some loss, and some have vertical creases and splits, and there is some consequent weakness to the bindings; the pages are discoloured with tanning to edges, foxing, annotations and other marks, together with moderate general age wear including some creases and tears.
