Small collection of Goss and other antique / vintage crested china / pottery relating to Somerset, Dorset, Bristol and Gloucestershire
A small collection of seven items of antique / vintage crested china and pottery relating to towns and cities in the West Country of England (Somerset, Dorset, Bristol and Gloucestershire), dating from the late 19th or early 20th centuries, as follows:
(a) A W. H. Goss crested china miniature milk jug / creamer with "Weston Super Mare" (seaside resort in Somerset) crest and gilt rim, measuring approximately 4.8cm (1.9in) in height and 5.4cm (2.15in) in diameter excluding handle; the base is marked with the black printed Goshawk stamp together with a small yellow painted star mark and an old price in pencil. There is some age wear including a few light scratches and slight marks to the surface, moderate wear to the gilt, slight marking to the foot, and some wear to the crest including discoloration / oxidation to the red paint; there are some imperfections in the glaze including unevenness, numerous tiny pockmarks, some tiny spot marks and pinholes, and the occasional small unglazed patch.
(b) An anonymous early 20th century vintage crested pottery rectangular pin dish / tray, with "Arms of Bridgwater" (market town in Somerset) crest and gilt rim, measuring approximately 13.7 x 10.6 x 1.6cm (5.4 x 4.15 x 0.65in); there is some faint and indecipherable raised lettering to the base, together with a small red painted dash. This piece would have been cheaply manufactured, and is not of good quality, having numerous irregularities in the moulding and marks and defects in the glaze, which is finely crazed throughout. There is some light scratching and abrasion to the surface and some wear to the gilt, together with some fleabites / nibbles and small rough patches to the rim.
(c) A W. H. Goss crested china model of the Royal Salisbury Jack (leather pitcher) with "Bournemouth" (coastal resort in Dorset) crest and gilt rim, measuring approximately 4.6 x 3.7 x 2.5cm / 1.8 x 1.45 x 1in (max); the base is marked with the small black printed Goshawk mark together with the description "MODEL O[F] THE / ROYAL SALISBURY JACK / FROM ORIGINAL IN MUSEUM" together with a small yellow painted mark. There is some age wear including slight scratching to the surface, slight wear to the gilt, slight wear / imperfections to the crest and slight marking to the base; there are some imperfections in the glaze including tiny spot marks, bumps and pockmarks and one or two tiny glazed-over nibbles to the base edge, whilst the twin vertical moulding seam lines (one running along the outside of the handle) are clearly visible to the exterior.
(d) A Foley China (Wileman & Co.) crested china dish with fluted sides and scalloped edges, large "Bristol" coat of arms and gilt trim, dating from c.1895-1910, and measuring approximately 17.6 x 14.8 x 3.4cm (6.95 x 5.85 x 1.35in) at its widest points; the base bears a green printed "THE FOLEY CHINA / ENGLAND" crown and monogram stamp, together with an additional black printed retailer's stamp which reads: "MANUFACTURED FOR / JOHN WILLIAMS & Co. / GLASS & CHINA ROOMS / CASTLE STREET / BRISTOL". There is considerable age wear including scratching and abrasion to the surface, wear to the crest and gilt, and wear and marking to the foot, together with light brown staining and areas of fine crazing around the edges / sides; there are some manufacturing imperfections including a small glazed-over chip and some patches of roughness to the rim, and some spot marks, tiny bumps and pinholes in the glaze.
(e) A W. H. Goss crested china model of the Ostend vase, with "Cheltenham" (spa town in Gloucestershire) crest and gilt rim, measuring approximately 5.8cm (2.3in) in height and 4.2cm (1.65in) in diameter; the base is marked with the black printed Goshawk mark with the description "MODEL OF / OSTEND VASE, A.D.1617 / IN LIEBAERT / MUSEUM AT / OSTEND. / RD. NO. 495673" together with a small light brown painted mark. There is some shallow chipping to the rim with slight wear to the remaining gilt, together with age wear including slight scratching and marking to the surface, some discoloration, marking and imperfections to the crest and marking to the base; there are some imperfections in the glaze including a few tiny spot marks, tiny bumps and pinholes, whilst the twin vertical moulding seam lines are clearly visible to the exterior.
(f) A Foley China (Wileman & Co.) crested china tea cup, c.1895-1910, with large "Tewkesbury" (market town in Gloucestershire) crest to one side, gilt rim and handle trim, measuring approximately 6.8cm (2.7in) tall and 7.8cm (3.05in) in diameter at the top; the base bears a black printed "THE FOLEY CHINA / ENGLAND" crown and monogram stamp and a black printed retailer's stamp which reads "MANUFACTURED FOR / W LAWRENCE / CHINA ROOMS / TEWKESBURY", together with small red painted and incised marks. There is some age wear including considerable scratching and abrasion to the surface, considerable wear to the gilt, and lesser wear to the crest, whilst there is some crazing to the handle together with a short craze line to the base; there are some manufacturing imperfections to the glaze (including some tiny spot marks, bumps and pinholes) and decoration.
(g) A Carlton China (Wiltshaw and Robinson) crested china miniature jug of attractively moulded hexagonal shape, in off-white glaze with gilt rim and "Northleach" (small Cotswold market town in Gloucestershire) crest to one side, measuring approximately 4.9cm (1.95in) in height at the centre and 7cm (2.75in) across from the top of the handle to the end of the lip; the base bears the grey printed "W&R / STOKE ON TRENT / CARLTON CHINA" crown and swallow stamp together with the black printed retailer's mark, which reads "PUBLISHED BY / F.W. GARDINER / THE COTSWOLD PRESS / NORTHLEACH"; below the crest are the words "COPYRIGHT. F.W.G." There are a couple of very small chips / fleabites to the lip, together with slight scratching and abrasion to the surface, some wear to the gilt rim, and slight wear together with some fading / oxidation to the crest; there are various manufacturing irregularities, including imperfections to the transfer of the crest and various imperfections in the glaze including numerous tiny pockmarks and spot marks.
