Product description

Royal Wedding (Duke of York and Princess May, 1893) antique commemorative cup and saucer

An interesting late Victorian antique commemorative ornamental china cup and saucer, produced to mark the Royal Wedding of Prince George, Duke of York, and Princess Mary of Teck, 6 July 1893, in white glaze with gilt trim, the cup and saucer having matching transfers (with some hand-colouring) incorporating a heart, Cupids, Union Jacks and flowers with the words "TO / COMMEMORATE THE / MARRIAGE OF THEIR. R.H. / The Duke of York / & / Princess May / JULY 6TH. / 1893 / MAY JOY AND HAPPINESS BE THEIRS". (Mary of Teck was known to her family as "May"; Prince George would later become King George V, and his wife Queen Mary.) The saucer, which measures approximately 12.9cm (5.1in) in diameter, is marked to the base with the red painted number "3139"; the cup, which measures approximately 6.3cm (2.5in) in height and 6.2cm (2.45in) in diameter at the top (max, excluding handle), is unmarked.

Both cup and saucer are finely crazed throughout, with some discoloration to the glaze (especially to the handle and rim of the cup, whilst there are some pale brown patches to the saucer) and marking to the feet, together with age wear including scratches and abrasions to the glaze, wear to the gilt (especially to the saucer) and slight wear to the transfers; there is a very short hairline crack to the rim of the cup, whilst the saucer has a Y-shaped hairline crack near the centre which is visible to the underside only; there are various manufacturing imperfections including several noticeable spot marks, pinholes and tiny bumps in the glaze. Even so, they still display well, and would make a lovely addition to a collection of antique commemorative china or royal memorabilia.
