New Stencils and Their Use - F. N. Vanderwalker (1948) - vintage art / interior decoration book

F. N. Vanderwalker, "New Stencils and Their Use: A Practical Working Method for the Average Painter and Decorator" (Wilmette, Illinois, Frederick J. Drake & Co.; second edition, 1948). Vintage hardback art / interior decoration book (dark green cloth boards with gold titles), 148pp, measuring approximately 13.8 x 19.4 x 2cm (5.45 x 7.65 x 0.8in). "In offering this work it is the author's hope that the organized, orderly presentation of the essentials of good stencil work will assist in solving the problems of furnishing better decoration for the average moderate-cost home, the average church, lodge hall, and small theater. ... Likewise it is expected that the subject matter and illustrations presented here will be of more service to the average painter and decorator than to professionals." This book includes several black and white illustrations of stencil designs, many of which (despite its comparatively late date) are distinctly Arts and Crafts or Art Nouveau in style, and thus it will be an useful source of inspiration to anybody who wishes to decorate a c.1900-20 house in appropriate period style.

No dustjacket; the cover is discoloured with ink staining to the front and other marks together with age wear including scratches to the surface and wear and bumping to edges and corners; the front endpaper bears an old pre-decimal price in pencil, and the inside front cover has an old bookseller's label glued to the corner, which has left slight red dye staining adjacent and opposite, and is itself worn and damaged; the pages are discoloured with tanning to the edges and other marks together with some edge wear, the odd slight corner crease and general reading wear.
