Product description

Losol Ware (Keeling & Co.) tableware - "Wilton" soup bowls x 6, "Chusan" serving bowl

An attractive set of six c.1920s vintage Losol Ware (Keeling & Co. Ltd., Burslem) pottery soup bowls in "Wilton" pattern together with a two-handled serving bowl or lidless tureen (not missing a lid, as there is no flange to hold a lid in place) in "Chusan" pattern; both patterns incorporate large orange-red flowers, and are formed from a mixture of underglaze (dark blue) and overglaze handpainted, brown transfer and gilt decoration on a white background. The tureen measures approximately 30cm (11.8in) across including handles, 25cm (9.85in) across excluding handles, 9.8cm (3.85in) tall including handles, and 8.2cm (3.25in) tall excluding handles; the bowls each measure approximately 19.8cm (7.8in) in diameter and 3.5cm (1.4in) in height, and thus fit neatly inside the serving bowl for storage. Four of the bowls bear a brown printed stamp with a crown and the words "Losol Ware / WILTON / KEELING & Co. Ltd. / BURSLEM / ENGLAND", whilst the tureen bears a similar mark with the name "CHUSAN" instead of "WILTON"; the fifth bowl bears a similar printed mark without the pattern name, and the sixth has no printed mark at all (this bowl having - unlike the rest - some obvious stray underglaze blue, may have been sold as a second); in addition to the printed stamps, there are various painted and gilt marks, whilst four of the bowls are impressed "4 - 22", "5 - 22" or simply "22", which probably indicates that they were made in 1922.

The tureen has some crazing and light brown staining in places; one of the bowls has some crazing, two or three small chips / nibbles to the edge, and considerable wear to the painted decoration, whilst another has a small amount of crazing, and a third has a tiny nibble to the edge (plus another small chip which clearly dates from manufacture as it is glazed over); all seven pieces have a degree of general wear commensurate with their age, including scratching, abrasion, and wear to the gilt and painted decoration, together with various manufacturing imperfections in the glaze and decoration.
