Lives of Good & Great Women (Chambers, c.1894) - Victorian hardback biographical book

Anon., "Lives of Good & Great Women" (London & Edinburgh, W & R. Chambers, Limited, n.d., but inbound publisher's catalogue includes date 1894; reverse of front endpaper carries original gift inscription in pencil dated "June 3rd. /97"). Late Victorian hardback biographical book (dark green cloth boards with gilt and printed decoration), 288pp plus title page, frontispiece and 40-page publishers' catalogue of "Books suitable for prizes and presentation", measuring approximately 13.2 x 18.7 x 3cm (5.2 x 7.35 x 1.2in). "A good life is the best of sermons: it is not hard to understand, nor easy to forget, and it is never too long! The lives here presented include the lofty and the lowly, culled from many departments of life, ranging from Queen Victoria down to many humble yet noble workers for the well-being of the race." (Aside from Victoria, the subjects of these biographies include Florence Nightingale, Octavia Hill, Elizabeth Fry and Lady Jane Grey.)

No dustjacket; the cover is much discoloured and marked with age wear including considerable wear to the printed and gilt decoration, scratching to the surface and wear to the edges and corners; the pages are discoloured with tanning to the edges, foxing and various other marks (including a couple of annotations) together with a few slight creases and pinprick indentations and some edge, corner and general reading wear; the binding is weak in places but remains intact. (Included with this volume are a few relics of its original owner, in the form of fern leaves, a peacock tail feather, a small colour print of "A Highland Garden, after the original by Flora Pilkington", and four pages from a church magazine reporting the resignation of the Rev. W. Y. Fullerton from his pastorate at Melbourne Hall to become Home Secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society, including a portrait which appears to be that of Fullerton.)
