Father Time's Story Book, for the Little Ones - Kathleen Knox (c.1880s) - Victorian book

Kathleen Knox, "Father Time's Story Book, for the Little Ones", with illustrations by H. W. Petherick (London and Sydney, Griffith Farran Okeden and Welsh, n.d., c.1880s). Late Victorian hardback children's fiction book (greeny-yellowy-brown cloth boards with printed floral and gilt titles / decoration) with old home-made dustwrapper, 192pp plus title and contents pages and engravings, measuring approximately 11.2 x 17.4 x 2.2cm (4.4 x 6.85 x 0.85in). In this book, a lame boy, "poor little Mat", is told a series of stories by Old Father Time, including "a Story that was Ticked to him by the Old Clock", "a Story about a Wood Fairy" and "a Story that was Creaked to him by an Old Weathercock". The inside front cover bears the original bookseller's label (Heard & Sons, Truro).

The dustwrapper is very much browned / discoloured, marked and worn with age; the cover is discoloured with considerable marking (including slight damp marks) together with age wear including slight indentations, small bulges / blisters to the cloth and bumping to the spine ends and corners; the inside covers and endpapers are much discoloured with browning and foxing, the front endpaper having an old inscription in ink; the pages are discoloured with tanning to edges and numerous marks including some foxing, together with considerable edge and corner wear including nicks and indentations, whilst one of the engravings has been partly hand-coloured; the binding is weak, with the text block coming loose from the cover.
