Product description

English Church Craftsmanship - F. H. Crossley (Batsford "British Heritage Series", 1941)

An early 1940s vintage hardback book on the subject of British ecclesiastical art and architecture, with its original pictorial dustwrapper designed by Brian Cook. "The wanton destruction lately [through Second World War enemy action] of some of the heritage of English Church Craftsmanship at London, Bristol, Coventry and elsewhere will perhaps direct attention to the riches which still remain to us in our churches, often unregarded, misunderstood and neglected. There is no man living who could make an abler or more understanding guide than Mr. Crossley to this manifold wealth of design, feature, carving and detail in stone, wood, metal, glass or paint, ranging from 1100 to 1800 A.D. With its 200 or so illustrations from photographs and splendid colour plates, this book will form a welcome and valuable addition to its ever-growing series."

Whilst the book shows various signs of age (see condition description below), it remains complete and fully legible, and would make a lovely addition to a collection of books on architectural or church history.
