Product description

Elizabeth Craig's Family Cookery (c.1935) - vintage recipe book

"Elizabeth Craig's Family Cookery" (London and Glasgow, Collins, n.d., c.1935). Hardcover (red cloth boards), 887pp plus title, introductory and contents pages and plates, measuring approximately 13.8 x 20.3 x 8.2cm (5.45 x 8 x 3.25in). A vintage cookery book, described on the title page as "A new standard economical cookery on comprehensive lines, containing 2000 recipes and hints and illustrated with 64 pages of photographs and 14 pages printed in full colour [although two of the latter appear to be missing]. It is a complete guide to the modern housewife." Includes such recipes as "Kokernut Kisses," "Egg and Sausage Scramble," "Cucumber Sauce," "Rice and Shrimp Salad," "Blitz Torte" and "Spanish Rarebit," and chapters on "Vegetarian Dishes," "Local Dishes," "Jewish Cookery" and "The Empire Kitchen" (with recipes making use of produce from Australia, Canada, India, the West Indies, New Zealand and South Africa).

No dustjacket; the cover is very much discoloured with damp stains and other marks, and is very worn (half of the spine is missing, and the cloth is coming loose from the back board and is splitting along many of the edges), and the back cover is coming loose; the pages (and likewise the inside covers and endpapers) are discoloured with tanning, browning and damp staining / damage to the edges, together with age wear including occasional tears, creases and edge / corner wear. It nevertheless - with the exception of the two missing colour plates already mentioned - remains complete and fully legible, and is thus offered for sale as a reading, reference or working copy of this scarce and interesting 1930s recipe book.
