Product description

Crown Devon (Fielding's) "Georgian" Silverine twin-handled sugar bowl - floral / stripes

A genuine vintage Crown Devon (Fielding's) "Georgian" Silverine twin-handled pottery sugar bowl, in off-white shiny glaze throughout with metallic silver finish to the exterior. Unlike other pieces of this ware that we have seen - including
this one - the metallic finish does not cover the whole of the exterior, but incorporates a pattern of stylised flowers and stripes - somewhat reminiscent of early 19th century silver lustre pearlware - in the underlying off-white glaze. This example also differs from others that we have come across in that it does not carry a printed stamp, but bears the impressed mark "GEORGIAN / ENGLAND" with a monogram (a "C" with a smaller indistinct letter - quite possibly a "D" - inside), together with the number "540" and other small marks in silver. Please note that there is a small chip (about 0.3cm / 0.1in long) to the rim, which is covered by the silver and thus presumably dates from manufacture, together with other irregularities in the moulding, glaze and decoration; this, together with the absence of a printed stamp, suggests that this piece may have been decorated in a non-standard manner, either for its decorator's own use or for sale as a second.

Whilst this original vintage piece shows various signs of age including crazing (see condition description below) in addition to the imperfections already mentioned - and, due to these defects, we do not recommend that it be used for food or drink - it would nonetheless make an interesting addition to a Crown Devon collection, or an appealing decorative accessory for display in a vintage-style interior.
