A c.1930s-50s vintage complete set of Staunton-type boxwood chess pieces (without board) by John Jaques & Son, in their original wooden box with sliding lid bearing the original green, red and white paper label with the initials "J. J. & S." to the bottom right corner. The box measures approximately 16.2 x 8.9 x 5.3cm (6.4 x 3.5 x 2.1in); the kings and pawns respectively measure approximately 6.1cm (2.4in) and 2.6cm (1in) in height and 2.6cm (1in) and 1.7cm (0.65in) in diameter at the base. Although far from being top-of-the range products of their renowned maker (the knights are very much simplified from the original Staunton design, and there are some small splits in the wood which clearly date from manufacture), they are nevertheless of reasonable quality and smoothly finished. The head of one of the white knights holds only loosely to its base, and the other three knights have been glued at the joints with some glue residue visible (especially to the black knights); the pieces are otherwise in generally good condition with slight age wear (with the natural colour of the wood being visible to some edges of the black knights) and marking to the white pieces; there is some age wear to the box including considerable marking to the surface, and the lid label is discoloured with marks (including ballpoint), stains and surface loss.
