Vintage pack of pictorial playing cards by Truslove & Hanson, with hunting scene ("Gone to Earth"), c.1930
A vintage pack of "Pneumatic Series A" gilt-edged pictorial playing cards (standard size, complete set with one Joker), by Truslove & Hanson, Court Stationers and Booksellers, Sloane St., London, c.1930, with hunting scene in colour entitled "Gone to Earth" to the reverse of each card. The Ace of Spades is marked "When used in Great Britain and Ireland / Duty Three Pence / De La Rue & Co. / London", which suggests that these cards may in fact have been produced by De La Rue for sale by Truslove & Hanson. The cards come with their original cardboard carton with sliding inner drawer, measuring approximately 6.4 x 9.5 x 2.4cm (2.5 x 3.75 x 0.95in), with sample card glued to one side. The cards show considerable discoloration and wear to the edges together with some marks; the carton is very worn, marked and discoloured with the ends of both the outer box and inner drawer missing, together with tearing to the sides, a handwritten number to the front and fading to the sample card.
