A very old wooden / treen soap container with domed lid, measuring approximately 7.5cm (2.95in) tall including the lid, 8.5cm (3.35in) in diameter at the widest point of the lid, and 7.3cm (2.85in) in diameter at the base. To one side is attached a printed label, very much yellowed and not easily legible, which bears the name and address of Patey's, a London firm of perfumers and toilet soap makers; the style of this label, with its coat of arms, suggests a date of between 1850 and 1875. Inside the box is a small wooden vessel measuring approximately 3.9cm (1.55in) in diameter; this may or may not be original to the pot. The inside of the pot bears traces of a white substance, which may or may not have been the original contents. Both box and vessel are scruffy and stained with age: there are a couple of small nicks to the inside rim of the box, and several nicks / scrapes to the outer rim of its lid; a few patches of varnish have been lost from the outside, and there is some cracking to the inside of the lid. The box, however, is basically intact, and the lid fits snugly.
