A large and heavy pattress or mounting block intended for a large gas light fitting (as would have been used in a public building such as a chapel), c.1900, in shiny black glazed earthenware, measuring approximately 18.9cm (7.45in) in diameter and 4.5cm (1.75in) in depth. The underside is stamped with a mark incorporating the words "VERITAS LAMP WORKS" and the number 231. There is a hole in the centre, dating from manufacture; a second hole has been drilled alongside it at a later date, as has a third hole in the side. These later holes suggest that the pattress has been used as a base for a table lamp; it could therefore again be used as such, or else it could make a suitable plinth for a large vase. Please note, however, that there are chips to some edges and to the underside, as well as scratching and scuffing to the surface (especially the edges and base) and crazing (only noticeable upon close inspection).
