An unusual late 1920s circular gift box / 1928 calendar, measuring approximately 25.3cm (9.95in) in diameter and 2.3cm (0.9in) deep, with matt-finish, lightly textured lid printed with a portrait of a young lady wearing a black hat. The base of the box bears a small gold-edged label printed "MADE IN IRELAND" with the handwritten code "B8/50", whilst the inside of the lid has a label attached which reads: "TO USE AS CALENDAR / PUSH TOP OUT OF RIM / PATENT No. 224,149", together with a somewhat torn and frayed pink ribbon hanger and the stub of the purple calendar ribbon; the original 1928 calendar tab, with the somewhat frayed remainder of the purple ribbon, is detached from the lid and is worn and discoloured with age. Inside the box is a set of six white linen handkerchiefs with flower and insect designs embroidered in white, together with a note with Christmas and New Year greetings from Mabel Furse to her friend Miss Smith, dated Dec. 20th, 1927, written on a printed receipt sheet for "S. Furse, General and Hardware Stores, River Street, Mevagissey", with billhead advertising "White May" and "Royal Standard" "BP" Lamp Oils. There is some marking and discoloration to the box with age wear including wear to the edges and a small indentation to the lid rim; the handkerchiefs are discoloured with some light brown staining, and there is some verdigris to the pins which hold five of the handkerchiefs to the backing paper; the note is discoloured with some age wear.
