Treen bowl made from the teak of H.M.S. Terrible, by Lister Wood Craft, c.1930s (Boer War) (SOLD)

A vintage wooden (treen) bowl, c.1930s, measuring approximately 15.1cm (5.95in) in diameter and 4cm (1.55in) in height, with a round metal plaque bearing the words "FROM THE TEAK OF H.M.S. TERRIBLE" attached to the centre; the base is marked "Lister WOOD CRAFT".  Although there have been eight vessels of this name in the British Royal Navy, the timber of this bowl almost certainly came from the seventh, a Powerful-class protected cruiser launched in 1895, which saw service on the China Station and provided landing parties for the relief of Ladysmith during the Second Boer War, and was sold for breaking up in 1932.  There is considerable age wear to the surface of the wood including scratches, marks and numerous small indentations; the plaque is tarnished with considerable corrosion and verdigris to the pins which hold it in place.
