The Wide, Wide World - Elizabeth Wetherell (Susan Warner) (1888) - Victorian fiction book

Elizabeth Wetherell (pen name of Susan Warner), "The Wide, Wide World. With Ten Engravings on Steel" (London, George Bell & Sons, 1888). Late Victorian hardback fiction book (dark green cloth boards with gilt ornamentation to spine and gilt page edges), 519pp plus title and contents pages, engravings and 24-page publisher's catalogue, measuring approximately 12.3 x 18.4 x 3.9cm (4.85 x 7.25 x 1.55in). This very popular sentimental novel by the American writer Susan Warner (written under her nom de plume of Elizabeth Wetherell), first published in 1850, centres on the character of young Ellen Montgomery, who in adverse circumstances seeks to live a Christian life; although by no means a scarce text, this is a scarce edition with appealing, finely detailed engravings.

No dustjacket; there is considerable wear, marking and discoloration to the cover, the spine being darkened with age; the binding is somewhat weak, the front endpaper and frontispiece having become detached, whilst some other pages are half loose; the pages are discoloured with tanning to edges and various marks (including some ingrained dirt to the top edges and the edges of the loose pages) together with some edge and corner wear (especially to the loose pages) and occasional corner creases and edge tears.
