"The Methodist Pulpit", vol. 1 (London, A. Osborne, 1872). Hardcover, 162pp plus introductory pages and four portraits, measuring approximately 12.7 x 18.4 x 1.5cm. A scarce collection of twelve sermons - one each by Rev. William Arthur, Rev. Luke H. Wiseman, Rev. Samuel Coley, Rev. William O. Simpson, Rev. William Cooke, Rev. George T. Perks, Bishop Simpson (United States), Rev. Charles Garrett, Rev. Thornley Smith, Rev. John Rhodes, Rev. Daniel Sanderson and Rev. John Rattenbury - which together "represent the Methodist preaching of different denominations and of different lands"; also included is President Luke H. Wiseman's Address to the Wesleyan Conference, London, 1872, together with portrait engravings of Wiseman, Coley, Garrett and Sanderson, and a short additional article by Wiseman printed after his sermon. No dustjacket; the cover is very worn, marked and discoloured, and the binding is weak in places although there are no loose pages. The pages are discoloured with some marking and foxing, and a few page edges are irregularly or slightly roughly cut, whilst the portraits are very tanned and marked by the printing of adjacent pages; the front endpaper has a former owner's name written on it in pencil, and an old (pre-decimal) price is written in pencil on one corner of the inside front cover.
