"The Grand Race Game" (board only), c.1890-1914

A late Victorian or Edwardian "The Grand Race Game" (board only), printed in Germany, c.1890-1914.  The sturdy paper-covered card board (approximately 0.2cm / 0.1in thick) folds into three sections with cloth hinges, and measures approximately 61.3 x 31.5cm (24.15 x 12.4in) fully unfolded and 20.4 x 31.5cm (8.05 x 12.4in) fully folded.  The playing surface is printed in distinctively late Victorian or Edwardian style with a "race track" divided into 100 numbered spaces with a picture of two racehorses with jockeys to the centre and ornamental designs to the corners, whilst the reverse is covered with colourful geometric patterned paper.  The board has some discoloration, fading and marking with wear commensurate with its age including numerous surface scratches and wear to the edges and corners; there has been some insect attack to the cloth hinges (one hinge in particular) although the sections nevertheless still hold together well.
