"The Game of Spring-O" ("British Manufacture - Made in England"), c.1920, in the original box which has a delightful picture of a caveman brandishing a hammer at three fierce beasts! This game consists of a board with nine coloured thick card rings attached, each ring marked with a score, together with four springy metal "catapults" attached to coloured wood blocks, which would have flung either counters or ping-pong balls (not included) on to the board. The rules of the game would originally have been glued to the inside lid, but have been almost completely eaten away by insects (presumably attracted by the glue); however, to the lid is a secondary illustration showing the game being played by a family group, and from this the method of play can be deduced. The box, which measures approximately 26.9 x 26.9 x 2.9cm (10.6 x 10.6 x 1.15in) is very worn with tearing, creasing and splitting to some edges and some loss to the sides together with considerable marking, staining, fading and discoloration; the board is marked and discoloured with some age wear and insect nibbling to the edges of the paper covering of the upper surface, and there is some rust to the pins which hold the rings in place; the catapults are very tarnished with some rust patches but retain their springiness.
