A mid-19th century (c.1850s-60s) Sunderland lustre pottery jug, measuring approximately 9.1cm (3.6in) in height including handle, 9.1cm (3.6in) in diameter excluding handle and pouring lip, and 11.9cm (4.7in) across including handle and lip, in off-white glaze with orange lustre painted trim, a brown metallic transfer "sailor's farewell" scene to one side and a religious verse on the theme of loss to the other, both with blue-green, yellow and deep brownish-red handpainted touches; there are no identifying marks.  (The "sailor's farewell" scene, showing the sailor waving his cap in farewell to his wife and child whilst stepping on board a small boat, differs somewhat from the version more commonly found.)  There is some old chipping and nibbling to the lip and foot, together with considerable age wear including scratching and abrasion to the surface, wear / imperfections to the decoration, and wear and marking to the foot; there are some manufacturing imperfections in the moulding including a horizontal ridge to the interior, together with imperfections in the glaze including small bumps and pinholes.
