"Sparkles" (London and Glasgow, Blackie & Son Limited, c.1940s). Children's story book with board covers and cloth spine, approximately 65pp, measuring approximately 15.9 x 22.1 x 1.8cm (6.25 x 8.7 x 0.7in). This scarce book, with pictorial cover design by Muriel Baines showing a boy in blue and a girl in orange-red running in windy autumnal weather (the boy's sailor cap has blown off) against a light brown background, contains stories and poems with black and white illustrations plus a colour frontispiece of "Humpty Dumpty" designed by S. G. Hulme Beaman; one of the stories ("Wendy's Secret") tells of a girl's worry that Santa Claus would not be able to visit her because the chimney had been blocked by a new electric fire, and how she found, upon waking, that he had come through the window instead! There is a small retailer's label to one corner of the inside front cover, which reads "A. W. JORDAN / Printer & Stationer / TRURO". No dustjacket; the cover is marked and discoloured with considerable wear including deep scratching and surface damage to the front, bumping to the corners and fading to the spine; the front endpaper is missing, whilst the rear endpaper and inside covers are discoloured and foxed; the reverse of the frontispiece is indented where an old pencil price has been rubbed out, and there is a further indentation to the title page; the pages are discoloured with foxing in places and other occasional marks together with slight bumping to edges and corners and general reading wear.
