An English carnival glass plate or dish by Sowerby of Gateshead, c.1920s-30s, in marigold with a good amount of iridescence, moulded in the "Chunky" pattern (a.k.a. "English Hob and Button", pattern no. 2266) with diamond points and hexagonal buttons to the exterior, measuring approximately 23.7cm (9.35in) in diameter at its widest and 4.8cm (1.9in) deep. Although a "hostess plate" in a very similar pattern was reproduced in America by Indiana Glass in the 1970s, we believe this to be the Sowerby version, as the Indiana version measures 10in in diameter and was produced in blue, green or amber rather than marigold. The upper surface of this example has a very pitted appearance with numerous tiny lumps and pinholes, and there are various other imperfections including air bubbles, surface lines and a small blob of glass in place of one of the diamond points, whilst there is a certain amount of unevenness in the shaping of the edge (some of the points differing in height to those opposite). There is some age wear including scratches and scuffs, a small chip plus the odd nibble to the rim, and occasional nibbles to the diamond points.
