Reedyford - Silas K. Hocking (c.1911) - hardback fiction book - Cornish interest

Silas K. Hocking (with illustrations by Frederick Barnard), "Reedyford" (London and New York, Frederick Warne & Co., n.d. but with ink inscription dated 1911 to inside front cover). Early 20th century hardback fiction book (brown cloth boards with bevelled edges, gilt titles and embossed / black printed Art Nouveau design to front and spine, gilt page edges), 416pp plus six full-page illustrations and errata slip, measuring approximately 14.7 x 20.8 x 4.3cm (5.8 x 8.2 x 1.7in). Originally published in 1880, this novel, set in Cornwall, is one of the early works of the elder of the brothers Silas and Joseph Hocking, Cornish-born novelists whose "pulp Methodist" fiction enjoyed great popularity in its day; it is a tale in which Christian character, as epitomised by that of the hero George Tremain, is shown to be of far greater importance than the mere profession of a creed.

No dustjacket; there is considerable wear to the cover including several light patches, marking, discoloration, indentations, wear and bumping to edges and corners, and slight splitting to the hinge; the endpapers are browned with age, and the pages are discoloured with some foxing and other marks together with creases and edge and corner wear, whilst there is slight weakness to the binding.
