Product description

Old Testament Heroes, or, Men of Faith - Mildred Duff (Salvation Army, c.1905-10)

Colonel Mildred Duff (illustrated by J. W. Gibbs), "Old Testament Heroes, or, Men of Faith. Written for Children" (London etc., The Salvation Army Book Department, n.d., c.1905-10). Hardcover (dark red bevelled cloth boards with embossed black and gilt decoration / lettering and applied glossy colour picture to front), 92pp plus front endpaper, colour frontispiece, title and contents pages, measuring approximately 18.6 x 24.5 x 1.4cm (7.3 x 9.65 x 0.55in); the inside front cover contains advertisements for Dr. J. Collis Browne's Chlorodyne, Harbutt's Plasticine and (a charity appeal for) the Orphan Working School and Alexandra Orphanage, whilst the inside back cover advertises Quaker Oats. A collection of forty-eight chapters dealing with "the early history of the Chosen people, beginning with the call of Abraham, and closing with the Children of Israel's crossing of the Red Sea", intended for reading to or by children, and previously published in The Young Soldier; each chapter, except for the last, is accompanied by a full page black-and-white line drawing. The last page and / or endpaper (which presumably would have included an illustration for the last chapter) is missing, and it is possible that a leaf may have been removed from the front of the volume; however, this must have happened a long time ago, as the front endpaper and the last page bear negative impressions of the facing advertisements (being otherwise much browned).

No dustjacket; one or two pages / leaves missing (as noted above); the remaining pages are discoloured / browned with tanning to edges, some foxing (mainly to the front endpaper, frontispiece and title page) and other marks including occasional pencil scribbling, some creases, occasional tears and general reading wear, whilst there is some writing in pencil together with a rubbed-out old price to the front endpaper; there is some marking and discoloration to the cover with patchy fading to the back cover, together with age wear including scratching and scuffing to the applied picture, wear to edges and corners, and four fairly recent shallow insect holes to the back cover.
