"New Pier, Plymouth" souvenir china cup and saucer, c.1890-1914

A souvenir china cup and saucer, c.1890-1914, moulded in a swirl pattern with pink finish and gilt bands together with a monochrome transfer view of "New Pier Plymouth" to one side of the cup.  The scene shows the Promenade Pier, which was opened in 1884 (the pavilion being added in 1891) and destroyed in the Blitz in 1941.  The cup, which measures approximately 6.6cm (2.6in) in height and 6.8cm (2.7in) in diameter at the top, bears a dark red printed "S & K / MADE / IN GERMANY" stamp to the base together with the impressed numbers "7" and "304"; the saucer measures approximately 13.1cm (5.1in) in diameter, and is also impressed with the number "304" to the base.  There is considerable age wear to the pink finish and gilt rim of the cup, and to a lesser extent to the pink finish of the saucer and the rest of the gilt, whilst there is some wear to the transfer scene; both cup and saucer show some wear (including scratching) to the surface and marking to the feet, together with some manufacturing imperfections to the glaze (most noticeably to the underside of the saucer and the inside of the cup).
