Product description

Mrs. O. F. Walton, "A Peep Behind the Scenes" (c.1910s) - early 20th century fiction book - Arts and Crafts style cloth binding

Mrs. O. F. Walton, "A Peep Behind the Scenes" (London, The Religious Tract Society, n.d.). Early 20th century hardback fiction book (red cloth boards with Arts and Crafts-inspired vine leaf design in dark green and gilt to front and spine), 264pp plus black-and-white plates and 10-page publisher's catalogue of "popular stories" by Walton and three other authors, measuring approximately 14.5 x 21.5 x 4.2cm (5.7 x 8.45 x 1.65in). A nice early 20th century edition of the girls' story originally published in 1877, which tells of Rosalie, a 12-year-old girl who works in a travelling theatre. The front flyleaf of this copy bears a prize label from the Wesleyan Sunday School, Eccleston, "awarded to Edna Crawshaw for regular attendance during the year 1917"; the book itself, however, may have been printed about ten or fifteen years previously, judging by the style of the binding.

No dustjacket; the cover is discoloured with fading in places and considerable marking together with age wear including tearing to the top of the spine, a few tiny pinholes to the hinges, edge and corner wear including splitting and slight loss to the cloth and slight bumping, and surface wear including areas of damp damage to the surface finish; the inside covers and endpapers are much discoloured with various marks, the presentation label being much foxed; the pages are discoloured with tanning to the edges and some marks together with age wear including creases, occasional slight tears and indentations, and edge and corner wear; the binding is somewhat weak, and one of the plates is partly loose.
