description

A Shrewsbury souvenir caddy-type biscuit or confectionery tin (empty) with hinged lid, c.1910s-20s, measuring approximately 12 x 8.7 x 8.7cm (4.7 x 3.45 x 3.45in), printed to the exterior with sepia depictions of historic Shrewsbury buildings to each side ("Old Houses in the Wyle Cop", "Old Houses in Frankwell", "Irelands Mansion, High Street" and "Lloyds Mansion, The Square" respectively) and of the interior of the "Tudor Room, MORRIS'S CAFE, SHREWSBURY" to the lid - which suggests that the tin was originally produced for that establishment.  (Morris's Cafe opened on Pride Hill, Shrewsbury, in 1913; Morris and Co. still exists, although its business interests have changed completely!)  The printed background of the tin is ochre in colour, although the flange below the lid is cream, which suggests that the surface of the tin has darkened considerably with age.  There is considerable age wear to the exterior including scratches, scuffs and marks together with rust spotting (especially to the lid), whilst there is considerable tarnish and some rust to the base and interior; the lid is somewhat battered with large indentations, whilst there are a few slight indentations to the main body of the tin.
