Miniature ornamental china teapot with military portrait (probably Kitchener), c.1899-1918

A miniature ornamental china teapot, in white glaze with gilt trim and a colour transfer military portrait to one side, which we believe is of the 1st Earl Kitchener (1850-1916); the teapot thus probably dates either from the time of the Second Boer War (1899-1902) or the First World War (1914-18).  The teapot, which measures approximately 5.3cm (2.1in) in height at the spout, 8.5cm (3.35in) across from the end of the handle to the tip of the spout, and 5cm (1.95in) wide, is marked with an incised number "3939" to the back just above the base.  It is of poor quality with numerous defects in the glaze and a lump to the front near the base, whilst the lid, which is of even worse quality with rough edges and poor glazing, is ill-fitting and does not match the pot in colour (and therefore may not be the original).  There is some slight scratching to the surface, together with some wear to the transfer and gilt; there is some nibbling to the edge of the lid, which we believe dates from manufacture although some of it could be later damage.
