Mary Hubbard Howell, "In Safe Hands" (Warne's "Star" Series) (London, Frederick Warne and Co., n.d., c.1890s).  Hardcover (dark bluish-green cloth boards with embossed, black printed and gilt decoration), 288pp, measuring approximately 12.1 x 18 x 2.2cm (4.75 x 7.1 x 0.85in).  Joy Stanmore, the ten-year-old daughter of an impoverished inventor living in New York City, is brought to faith in Christ, and seeks to share her faith with a wealthy Jewish couple who have become her father's benefactors; the story goes on to describe how Joy's character and faith develop as she grows into womanhood.  The inside front cover bears a presentation label from "St. Andrew's Church Mission Chapel Sunday School, Willow Street, Plymouth".  No dustjacket; there is some age wear to the cover, especially to the edges, corners and spine ends, with a small hole worn through the cloth of the rear spine hinge, together with some marks; the inside covers and endpapers are marked and browned; the pages are discoloured with various marks, some creases, and wear to the edges and corners including a few short edge tears; there is some weakness to the binding in places.
