A c.1950s-60s vintage large oval pottery ashtray, advertising "Martell Cognac Brandy", by Pountney & Co Ltd (Bristol), in white and deep blue glaze with black underglaze transfer lettering, measuring approximately 27.2 x 17.5 x 4.5cm (10.7 x 6.9 x 1.75in); the base is marked with the green printed stamp "Bristol / Founded 1652 / England" (as used by Pountneys between 1957 and 1965). The ashtray wobbles slightly when placed on a flat surface; there is some age wear including scratching and abrasion to the surface and slight wear to the foot, together with minor manufacturing irregularities including slight unevenness to the surface and the shaping of the rim, a few tiny pinholes and bumps and some tiny spot marks in the glaze, and minor imperfections to the transfer lettering.
