An early 20th century "Johann Faber's Red Leads" (No. 3579, Made in Germany) slipcase box, measuring approximately 9.5 x 2.6 x 1.1cm (3.75 x 1 x 0.45in).  The box, which would originally have held twelve leads, now contains five of the original red pencil or drawing leads, each measuring about 9cm (3.55in) in length and 0.35cm (0.125in) in diameter and stamped with the crossed hammers trade mark and the words "JOHANN FABER. BAVARIA.", together with three blue leads of the same type (plus another which has snapped in two); we regret that we have no information about these leads, and so we do not know what type of pencil or drawing instrument they were intended for use with.  There is considerable age wear to the box including discoloration, marking, indentations and edge and corner wear; most of the leads appear to have been used, and all have some surface wear, whilst one of the red leads has lost a small piece from the end.
