Jay Brand brown Bakelite darning mushroom

A c.1930s Jay Brand mottled brown Bakelite darning mushroom, measuring approximately 9.5cm in length and 6.4cm in diameter; the handle unscrews to provide a storage space for needles, although, unlike most other Bakelite darning mushrooms, the underside of the dome / lid is open.  The underside of the lid is marked with a pictorial "A JAY BRAND PRODUCT" trademark, together with the words "MADE IN ENGLAND".  Although the lid is very much worn and scratched with heavy use, and there is a short hairline crack (less than 1cm long) and slight roughness to the lid edge, together with lesser wear, scratching and marking in other places, the mushroom remains suitable for its original purpose.
