A china whistling cup and saucer, c.1900, in cream glaze decorated with painted floral design and gilt trim, with the words "Home sweet Home" in gilt lettering to the side of the cup. The handle of the cup is in the form of a bird on a branch; the bird is a whistle which emits a high-pitched note. The cup, which has a printed "MANUFACTURED / IN GERMANY" stamp to the base, measures approximately 8.2-8.5cm (3.25-3.35in) in diameter at the top and 7.1cm (2.8in) tall, whilst the saucer measures approximately 14.6cm (5.75in) in diameter and 2.9cm (1.15in) deep. There is a crack about 2cm (0.8in) long to the edge of the saucer, and both cup and saucer have areas of crude "restoration" where chips have evidently been filled in and disguised with cream paint. There is also a chip to the head of the bird / whistle, together with some nibbles and fleabites to the feet of both cup and saucer, considerable wear to the gilt, slight wear to the painted decoration, a few surface scratches, and various small manufacturing irregularities including several pinholes and spot marks in the glaze, especially to the upper surface ot the saucer and the inside of the cup. This nevertheless remains a somewhat unusual decorative piece.
