An Art Deco ceramic Guinness advertising ashtray by Wiltshaw & Robinson (the manufacturers of Carlton Ware, although that name does not appear on this piece), c.1930s, in off-white glaze with transfer decoration comprising the famous slogan "GUINNESS / IS GOOD / FOR YOU" in large red letters alongside a picture of a pint glass of Guinness, surrounded by a black and jade green border. The ashtray, which measures approximately 14.5 x 11.4 x 1.7cm / 5.7 x 4.5 x 0.65in (max), is marked to the base with an impressed number "1485" and a black printed mark which reads as follows: "GA. 562 B / PRODUCED IN GREAT BRITAIN / FOR ARTHUR GUINNESS SON & CO., LTD., / BY WILTSHAW & ROBINSON LTD., / STOKE-ON-TRENT". There is a small chip (approximately 0.4 x 0.5cm / 0.15 x 0.2in) to one corner on the underside, together with some age wear including scratching to the surface, wear to the foot, and slight marking including an area of pale brown staining to one corner and another to the foot; there are numerous manufacturing imperfections including tiny bumps, various marks and many visible pinholes in the glaze, and a small glazed-over chip and a couple of unglazed patches to the edge.
