A commemorative ornamental china jug, produced by an unknown manufacturer for Whiteleys (the famous London department store) to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria (1837-1887). The jug, which measures approximately 12.7cm (5in) in height (max) and 7.7cm (3.05in) in diameter (max, excluding lip and handle), is finished in off-white shiny glaze with gilt rim and handle trim, with a small hand-coloured transfer of a crown with ribbons above and below, which read "QUEEN VICTORIA / HER JUBILEE YEAR 1887"; the base bears the brown printed retailer's stamp, depicting twin globes with the words "TRADE MARK / WILLIAM WHITELEY / UNIVERSAL PROVIDER / WESTBOURNE GROVE / LONDON. W.", together with a small blue painted "P". The glaze is finely crazed throughout with some staining in places, and there is some scratching and abrasion to the surface, wear to the gilt, imperfections to the transfer and a tiny nibble to the rim; there are some manufacturing imperfections including a short glazed-over fault line to the lower exterior, an unglazed patch just below the outer rim (on the right side of the lip), and irregularities in the glaze including various spots, bumps and pinholes, whilst the twin vertical moulding seam lines are clearly visible.
