Glass sugar crusher, early 19th century (SOLD)

A clear glass sugar crusher, probably dating from between 1800 and 1850, and measuring approximately 13cm (5.1in) in length.  Sugar crushers of this kind, which had one flattened and one rounded end, were used to grind lumps of loaf sugar in the cup or glass (the spoons then in use being too delicate for this purpose), although they are nowadays often mistaken for cocktail stirrers!  This one is clearly hand-made and somewhat irregular in shape, with a twisted stem, a rough pontil mark at the flattened end, and numerous small air bubbles and suchlike irregularities.  There is slight wear / damage from use to the grinding end; it is otherwise in good condition for its age.
